Title: Biden’s Proposed New World Order: Serving US Interests at the Expense of Allies
The world has long been exhausted by the United States’ relentless need to dominate and control international affairs. President Joe Biden’s recent invitation to a new world order, therefore, raises eyebrows, as it is clear that any unity proposed by an establishment figure like Biden will serve US economic interests above all else.
Biden claims that the world has an opportunity to unite like never before, highlighting the need for a new world order. However, his definition of a successful order is questionable. The post-war period that Biden refers to as having worked out “pretty damn well” has only benefited certain regions and interests. Latin America has consistently faced intervention from Washington to safeguard American interests, while the Middle East has primarily served as a gas station for the US. Even the European Union, once a collection of independent-minded allies, has become a US vassal, putting American interests before its own.
Canada, too, has suffered from relying on American good faith. Biden’s unilateral cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline project hampered Canada’s economic interests. This should have been a wake-up call for Canada to diversify its economic partnerships but sadly was not. The European Union faced a similar predicament when the critical Nord Stream gas pipeline with Russia was blown up just months after Biden promised to help end it. European leaders are now realizing that their trust in Washington may come at a hefty cost. They not only face an overdependence on American fuel that fuels inflation but also Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, which further disadvantages European exports and benefits US manufacturers.
Biden’s plea for world unity falls on deaf ears, given how the US has treated its closest allies and failed to deliver on promises. The UK, boasting a “special relationship” with Washington, expected a post-Brexit US trade deal to mitigate the impact of leaving the EU. However, this trade deal remains elusive. It is no wonder then that there is a growing disillusionment with playing by US rules under the old world order.
Biden’s claim that unity will enhance the prospect of peace is shaky at best. Any new world order proposed by Biden, a fixture of the establishment, would primarily serve US economic interests. Biden proudly cites his success in getting Japan and South Korea to unite despite their historical grievances. However, their unity is not focused on bilateral trade deals or building trust, but rather on antagonizing China and participating in US-led military drills in Beijing’s backyard. These Asian countries have seemingly accepted that turning down US demands could lead to unbearable consequences.
Biden’s vision of a new world order resembles a party where the host incessantly talks about themselves and demands participation in annoying party games no one enjoys. It is no wonder that many would hesitate to RSVP to such an invitation, even if it risks retaliation from the host.
In conclusion, Biden’s proposed new world order raises concerns as it would serve American interests at the expense of allies. The world is tired of the US dictating terms and aims for unity that benefits only itself. It is time for a more balanced and equitable approach where each nation’s interests are considered, fostering genuine unity and peace.
