China lashes out at US State Department report accusing the country of global information manipulation, labeling Washington the “true empire of lies.” In a statement, China’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the allegations, stating that “more and more people in the world” are seeing through America’s attempt to perpetuate its supremacy with lies.

The ministry further criticized the US for its long history of manipulation and disinformation campaigns, citing examples such as Operation Mockingbird during the Cold War era and the fabricated evidence used to justify wars in Iraq and Syria. It concluded that the US is an “empire of lies” through and through.

The US State Department report, released by the Global Engagement Center, claimed that China spends billions on a misinformation campaign and uses deceptive and coercive methods to shape the global information agenda. According to the report, Beijing promotes positive views of the Chinese Communist Party while suppressing critical information on issues such as Taiwan, human rights, the South China Sea, domestic economy, and international economic engagement.

Although the report alleges that China’s efforts have had limited impact worldwide, it acknowledges major setbacks in targeting democratic countries, attributing the failure to the well-developed civil society and local media in these nations.

China’s response to the report reflects its growing frustration with what it perceives as the US’ attempts to smear its image and maintain global dominance. The country argues that the US is misrepresenting facts and truth, using disinformation as a tool.

This escalating information war between China and the US has broader implications for global geopolitics. Both countries are vying for influence and control over the narrative, particularly in the digital age, where information flows freely and widely. The battle for hearts and minds extends beyond their domestic borders, with each nation seeking to shape public opinion on key issues.

China’s pushback against the US report highlights its determination to defend its reputation and counter America’s influence. It underscores the importance Beijing places on controlling its international image and narrative, particularly at a time when its geopolitical ambitions are increasingly being met with scrutiny and criticism.

The US, on the other hand, continues to view China’s information manipulation efforts as part of a broader strategy to exert influence and control. It sees Beijing’s actions as a threat to global stability and security, and as a challenge to its own position as the world’s leading superpower.

As the information war intensifies, it is crucial for the international community to critically evaluate the claims and counter-claims made by both China and the US. The battle for truth and transparency requires discernment and scrutiny, as well as a commitment to upholding the principles of free and independent journalism.

Amidst these competing narratives, it is essential for individuals to seek out diverse sources of information, question biases, and engage in open and informed dialogue. The ability to navigate through the complexities of the information landscape is paramount, as it enables us to form unbiased opinions and make informed decisions about the world we live in.
