German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has praised the recent summit on Ukraine hosted by Saudi Arabia, calling it a “very special” event. In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Scholz emphasized the need for a greater diplomatic effort to resolve the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.
Scholz expressed that continuing talks with Russia is useful as it increases pressure on the country to withdraw its troops and seek peace. He also referenced a similar diplomatic event hosted by Denmark in June, highlighting the importance of these talks and summits in finding a resolution.
The recent summit in Jeddah brought together security advisers and senior diplomats from participating nations. However, it failed to produce any substantial results. The participants only agreed that the UN Charter and Ukraine’s territorial integrity should be respected.
While Moscow has dismissed the Saudi-hosted negotiations, stating that meetings on the Ukraine crisis hold no value without Russia’s participation and consideration of its interests, Scholz believes that diplomatic efforts must continue.
When questioned about the possibility of further military support to Ukraine, particularly the reported delivery of Taurus long-range cruise missiles, Scholz did not provide a direct answer. He stated that every decision regarding military support will be carefully reviewed to determine its feasibility, relevance, and Germany’s contribution.
Germany has been reluctant to supply Ukraine with sophisticated military hardware, unlike many Western countries. However, earlier this year, Berlin succumbed to pressure and agreed to deliver Leopard 2 main battle tanks. Germany also permitted third parties to re-export German-made military vehicles to Ukraine.
In the midst of ongoing tensions, it is crucial to find a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Diplomatic efforts, such as the recent Saudi-hosted summit and talks, play a vital role in facilitating dialogue and pressuring Russia to reconsider its actions.
As the German Chancellor, Scholz’s support for diplomatic efforts reflects Germany’s commitment to finding a peaceful solution and fostering stability in the region. It remains to be seen how these diplomatic initiatives will progress and contribute to ending the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.
