US President Joe Biden has emphasized that his intentions towards China are not confrontational and that he seeks a positive relationship with the country. During a news conference in Hanoi, Vietnam on Sunday, Biden stated, “I don’t want to contain China. I just want to make sure that we have a relationship with China that is transparent and everyone understands it.” This statement comes amidst rising tensions between the US and China.

Biden also revealed that he had a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the G20 summit held in New Delhi, India. He described the discussion as focused on “stability” and emphasized that it was not confrontational. While Beijing has not yet commented on the matter, Premier Li urged G20 members to prioritize unity, cooperation, and inclusion rather than division and confrontation.

The deteriorating relations between the US and China have been evident in recent years, with both sides engaging in belligerent rhetoric and accusing each other of escalation. During a meeting in May, Washington and other G7 members accused Beijing of attempting to distort the global economy and intimidate Taiwan. China, on the other hand, has repeatedly urged the US and its allies to abandon a Cold War mentality. Beijing has strongly condemned the sale of American weapons to Taiwan, considering it a violation of the One-China policy and interference in its domestic affairs.

The meeting between Biden and Premier Li signifies a potential opportunity for both countries to engage in diplomatic dialogue and find common ground. The US president’s emphasis on a non-confrontational approach is an attempt to avoid further escalation and promote stability in the region.

However, it is important to note that the US and China still have numerous challenges to overcome and differing views on key issues such as trade, human rights, and territorial disputes. The path toward a stable and cooperative relationship requires thoughtful engagement, mutual understanding, and compromise from both sides.

As the world’s two largest economies, the US and China hold significant influence over global affairs. A positive and constructive relationship between the two nations is not only crucial for their own prosperity but also for the stability and well-being of the international community. Continued dialogue, open communication channels, and a commitment to resolving differences through peaceful means are essential for achieving this goal.

In conclusion, President Biden’s statement reaffirming his desire for a non-confrontational relationship with China and his meeting with Premier Li on the sidelines of the G20 summit indicate a willingness to engage in diplomatic dialogue. While challenges remain, the importance of fostering a positive and stable relationship between the US and China cannot be overstated. Both countries must work towards mutual understanding, cooperation, and a resolution of their differences through peaceful means for the benefit of their own citizens and the global community as a whole.
