US President Joe Biden has recently made a statement suggesting that his age has granted him wisdom, during a Labor Day event in Philadelphia. However, polls indicate that an increasing number of voters have concerns about his mental and physical fitness.
While addressing the crowd, Biden acknowledged that some people have criticized his age, saying, “you know, that Biden, he’s getting old, man.” In response, he emphasized, “Well, guess what? The only thing that comes with age is a little bit of wisdom. I’ve been doing this longer than anybody, and I’m going to continue to do it with your help.”
Biden’s comment about wisdom comes after a series of incidents that have raised questions about his cognitive abilities. Just a week prior, during a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) headquarters in Washington DC, he appeared visibly confused, asking an aide, “where am I going now?” as he walked away from a lectern.
This ongoing concern about Biden’s age and mental decline has been echoed by both Republicans and Democrats. According to a recent Wall Street Journal poll, 60% of registered voters do not believe that the 80-year-old president is mentally capable of fulfilling his duties, and 73% believe he is too old for the role.
These poll results are consistent with others conducted since Biden took office, suggesting a growing skepticism among the public about his fitness for presidency. Former President Donald Trump, who is often critical of Biden, has even suggested that Biden may not be able to make it to next year’s election, stating, “I think he’s worse mentally than he is physically.”
However, it’s worth noting that Trump’s age has also been a concern for some voters. By the time of the next election, he will be 78 years old. A June survey conducted by NBC News revealed that 55% of voters have concerns about Trump’s physical and mental health.
Interestingly, the same survey indicated that 68% of voters had worries about Biden’s physical and mental health, up from 51% before the 2020 election. Notably, even Democrats seem to have some reservations, with 43% expressing moderate to major concerns about Biden’s health, compared to 21% in 2020.
As the public’s attention remains on the mental and physical fitness of both Biden and Trump, it is clear that age will continue to be a topic of concern for voters in the upcoming election. The ability to effectively lead and make decisions is crucial for any president, and voters will undoubtedly weigh these factors when casting their ballots.
