A horrific incident unfolded in northeastern Bosnia on Friday when a man livestreamed the slaying of his ex-wife on Instagram before going on a deadly shooting rampage. The incident, which has been described as an extreme case of gender-based violence, has attracted the attention of the United Nations.
The shocking footage was shared on Instagram by Nermin Sulejmanovic, a bodybuilder and personal trainer from the town of Gradacac. In the video, Sulejmanovic informed viewers that they would witness a live murder. He then pointed a pistol at a badly beaten and bloodied woman, believed to be his ex-wife, and shot her in the head at point-blank range. The disturbing video, which received over 12,000 views and 125 likes, has since been removed from the platform.
Following the murder, Sulejmanovic proceeded to carry out a shooting spree in the streets of Gradacac. Armed with a handgun, he shot five more people, resulting in the death of a man and his young son. Three others, including a police officer, sustained injuries. As law enforcement pursued the gunman, Sulejmanovic ultimately took his own life before he could be apprehended.
The Prime Minister of Bosnia, Nermin Niksic, expressed his shock and sorrow over the tragic events in Gradacac. He stated that he could not find words to describe the horrific incident and emphasized that while the murderer had taken his own life, the lives of the victims could not be brought back.
Ingrid Macdonald, the United Nations’ resident coordinator for Bosnia, also expressed her horror at the livestreamed murder. She condemned the rising trend of femicide and severe cases of gender-based violence in the country and called for immediate collective action to prevent such attacks from occurring in the future.
It has been revealed that Sulejmanovic had a criminal record for drug smuggling and assaulting a police officer in the past. Although authorities have not disclosed a motive for the slaying, Sulejmanovic’s ex-wife had previously reported him for violence and threats. The identity of the victim has not been released.
This devastating incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger measures to combat gender-based violence and protect the lives of women. It serves as a reminder that more work needs to be done to address the underlying causes and root out this pervasive issue in societies around the world.
The United Nations and other organizations continue to advocate for comprehensive strategies and support systems to prevent such horrific acts and ensure the safety and well-being of women everywhere. Efforts must be focused not only on punishing the perpetrators but also on raising awareness, providing assistance to victims, and promoting gender equality to eradicate this form of violence once and for all.
As the global community grapples with this tragedy, it is crucial that governments, organizations, and individuals come together to take concrete actions that will bring about lasting change. Only through collective efforts can we create a world where incidents like the one in Bosnia become a thing of the past, and every person can live free from the fear of gender-based violence.
