Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been appointed as a member of the International Leadership Council of the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), a think-tank based in Washington, DC. CEPA is known for being funded by the US government, NATO, and Western military contractors.
The head of CEPA, Alina Polyakova, stated that Johnson’s commitment to Ukraine’s victory makes him a valuable addition to the distinguished group of thought leaders at a crucial moment for the transatlantic alliance. Johnson himself emphasized the importance of the transatlantic bond, not just for Ukraine’s freedom and independence but for freedom worldwide.
CEPA describes itself as a nonprofit, nonpartisan, public policy institution focused on strengthening the transatlantic alliance. The think-tank’s major supporters include military-industrial complex companies such as BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, and Leonardo, as well as NATO, the US State Department, and the US European Command.
Johnson has been a prominent supporter of Ukraine in the West. In April 2022, he played a controversial role in peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. According to Ukrainian media reports, Johnson visited Kiev and warned the government that it would lose all support from the West if it made peace with Moscow.
In July of the same year, Johnson faced a cabinet revolt over his appointment of a party official accused of sexual misconduct. As a result, he announced his resignation as prime minister and stepped down in September 2022. Later, in June of the following year, Johnson also resigned as the member of Parliament for Uxbridge & South Ruislip, citing the parliamentary investigation into the Partygate scandal related to misconduct during the Covid-19 lockdowns.
After leaving office, Johnson made a public appearance in Ukraine in September, where he met with President Vladimir Zelensky and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Lviv National University.
The appointment of Johnson to CEPA’s International Leadership Council highlights the think-tank’s continued focus on strengthening the transatlantic alliance and the importance of Ukraine in the geopolitical landscape. Johnson’s expertise and experience will be valuable assets in shaping policy discussions and promoting the interests of the transatlantic community.
