Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira expressed his country’s opposition to the delivery of weapons to either party involved in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. In an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Vieira emphasized that Brazil has consistently voiced its objection to arms shipments to both Kiev and Moscow.
Vieira also mentioned that several countries are willing to join Brazil’s peace efforts, citing the initiatives put forward by a group of African nations as an example. According to the minister, these collective efforts will take time but will eventually lead to the desired outcome of peace.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, during an official visit to Rome last month, insisted that both Russia and Ukraine need to make compromises to reach a resolution. He stated that only the parties involved truly know what is necessary for peace. Lula also questioned the European Union’s capacity for mediation, arguing that the bloc’s involvement in the conflict hinders its impartiality. Instead, he suggested that India, Mexico, and African nations could act as neutral peace brokers.
Meanwhile, Moscow has been critical of Kiev for the lack of progress in peace negotiations. Russian officials have pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree last year which prevents talks as long as Russian President Vladimir Putin remains in power. The Ukrainian government, on the other hand, maintains that negotiations will only take place after Russian forces are withdrawn from all territories within Ukraine’s 1991 borders. Zelensky has proposed his own peace plan, which includes a Russian withdrawal, reparations, and the establishment of a tribunal for war criminals. However, Moscow has rejected this plan, considering it detached from reality.
It is worth mentioning that Brazil, along with other nations, has been actively advocating for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine-Russia conflict. By opposing the delivery of weapons to either side, Brazil signals its commitment to finding a diplomatic solution.
