Britain has taken action to protect grain ships from Ukraine by dispatching military planes to monitor and deter potential attacks by Russia. The UN-backed deal that ensured a safe passage for the exports of agricultural produce has been suspended by Russia, leaving the future uncertain.

In a statement released on Friday, the UK government announced that they would utilize intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance to monitor Russian activities in the Black Sea. If any warning signs indicating preparations for attacks on civilian shipping or infrastructure are detected, the UK will call out Russia. The statement also pointed out that RAF aircraft are conducting flights over the area to discourage illegal Russian strikes against civilian vessels transporting grain.

This move comes after the Russian Defense Ministry issued a warning, declaring that all vessels entering Ukrainian ports would be treated as potential deliveries of military cargo. The tense situation has raised concerns about the safety and security of agricultural exports from Ukraine.

Moscow suspended the rain deal in July, citing the failure of Western countries to remove obstacles hindering the shipment of Russian agricultural produce and fertilizers. While Western sanctions do not directly target these exports, Russian officials argue that restrictions on their country’s banking sphere and logistics effectively obstruct the deliveries of Russian goods.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated after a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday that Moscow would immediately resume the deal once its demands are met. Erdogan also expressed optimism, mentioning ongoing consultations with the UN to revive the arrangement.

In another development, Reuters reported on Friday that Rosselkhozbank, Russia’s primary agricultural lender, might soon gain access to the SWIFT international banking system. Russian top banks were removed from SWIFT last year as part of the sanctions imposed on Moscow due to its military operation in Ukraine.

The overall situation highlights the volatility and geopolitical tensions surrounding agricultural trade between Russia and Ukraine. The UK’s deployment of military planes aims to safeguard the uninterrupted transportation of grain from Ukraine, ensuring the continuation of food supplies and trade agreements. The monitoring and deterrence measures act as a deterrent against potential attacks, protecting civilian vessels engaged in grain transportation.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether diplomatic efforts, such as consultations with the UN and potential compromises, will allow the UN-backed deal to be reinstated. Until then, Britain is committed to using its intelligence and military capabilities to monitor Russian activities and intervene if necessary.
