House Republicans have released documents showing that Hunter Biden, the son of current US President Joe Biden, received money from foreign sources by trading on his family name. The House Oversight Committee has identified $20 million in payments to Hunter Biden’s company, which they claim was a front to sell access to the “Biden network” while Joe Biden was serving as vice president.
According to Committee Chair James Comer, Hunter Biden sold his father as the brand and profited from millions of dollars in payments from oligarchs in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine. The committee alleges that no real services were provided other than access to the Biden network, including Joe Biden himself.
One of the published bank memos reveals a wire transfer from Russian oligarch Yelena Baturina to a shell company run by Hunter Biden and his business partner Devon Archer. Of the $3.5 million wired by Baturina, $1 million was transferred directly to Archer, while the rest was used to start up a new account to receive more funding from abroad. This demonstrates a direct financial connection between Hunter Biden and foreign sources.
Another memo shows that both Hunter Biden and Archer were appointed to the board of directors of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian gas company, for $1 million each per year. This appointment came after a meeting hosted by Burisma’s CEO and corporate secretary in Italy. The committee notes that Joe Biden visited Ukraine shortly after these payments, suggesting that his son’s role on the board added value to Burisma.
The third notable transaction involved a Kazakhstani oligarch who wired $142,300 to a company connected to Hunter Biden, and the very next day, the same amount was paid to Hunter Biden for a sports car. This financial exchange occurred after a meeting between Hunter Biden and the oligarch in Washington, DC.
The committee highlights the fact that Hunter Biden received millions of dollars in payments from multiple foreign sources and that Joe Biden had dinner with these individuals in Washington, DC. The implication is that these financial relationships may have influenced Joe Biden’s actions and decisions while serving as vice president.
It is worth noting that Joe Biden was the point person for Ukraine policy after the 2014 Maidan coup in Kiev. He previously bragged about getting a prosecutor fired by threatening to withhold loan guarantees, and this prosecutor had been investigating Burisma. The House Democrats impeached former President Donald Trump when he brought up this incident during talks with Ukraine. They claimed that Trump’s actions violated US laws.
These documents and revelations raise concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the extent to which foreign actors may have sought to influence US policy through financial ties to the Biden family. As the House Republicans continue to investigate these matters, the public and political landscape will likely be affected by the further disclosure of information related to Hunter Biden’s business dealings.
