Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman’s son, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, has been extradited to the United States to face drug trafficking charges. The extradition comes nine months after his arrest by Mexican authorities. According to US officials, Guzman Lopez will also face criminal proceedings in at least three different states.
The US Justice Department announced the news on Friday, with Attorney General Merrick Garland stating that the extradition of Guzman Lopez is part of the department’s effort to combat the Sinaloa cartel. Garland emphasized the bravery of law enforcement from both the US and Mexico in the fight against drug cartels, acknowledging that many had lost their lives in pursuit of justice. He vowed to continue pursuing individuals responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic that has devastated communities across the United States.
Guzman Lopez was apprehended earlier this year during a raid by Mexican police and military forces at a compound in Culiacan. The raid triggered gunfights between cartel members and security forces throughout the city. Ultimately, Guzman Lopez surrendered to authorities. He had been wanted since 2018 for his alleged involvement in the fentanyl and methamphetamine trade.
In April, US authorities charged Guzman Lopez, along with three of his brothers and numerous other cartel members, as part of a major crackdown on the Sinaloa gang. The brothers, known collectively as the “Chapitos,” were accused of large-scale drug trafficking, money laundering, and violent crimes. The charges stemmed from their assumption of cartel leadership following their father’s arrest and extradition to the United States. At the time, Guzman Lopez remained in Mexican custody.
Although the charges against Guzman Lopez were initially brought in Illinois, he will also face separate criminal litigation in New York and Washington, DC. The Washington, DC case, filed in 2018, accuses Guzman Lopez of conspiracy to distribute more than 5 kilograms of cocaine, 500 grams of methamphetamine, and 1,000 kilograms of marijuana.
Guzman Lopez’s father, Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, is currently serving a life sentence in the United States. In 2019, he was convicted on various charges, including drug trafficking, money laundering, firearms offenses, and a murder conspiracy.
