Sweden has raised its terror alert to the second highest level after a series of Quran-burning incidents in the country sparked anger among Muslims worldwide. The Swedish Security Service (SAPO) has increased the threat level from three to four on a five-point scale, indicating a “high” and “concrete” threat to the country and its population.
The decision to raise the threat level was not prompted by a single incident but was based on a comprehensive assessment of the current situation, according to Charlotte von Essen, the chief of SAPO. She stated that the threat of attacks from actors within violent Islamism has increased over the year, and Sweden has transitioned from being considered a legitimate target to a priority target for terrorist attacks.
Ahn-Za Hagstrom, the director of the National Center for Terror Threat Assessment, mentioned that the recent violations of religious scriptures have contributed to the perception of Sweden as a Muslim-hostile country. The desecration of the Quran by burning and stomping on it in Stockholm triggered outrage in Muslim-majority countries. Iraq and Iran, among others, condemned the incidents, and there were protests and flag burnings in different parts of the world.
The Quran-burning incidents have also led to diplomatic tensions, with Iraq expelling Sweden’s ambassador. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson criticized the destructive behavior and warned about the increased risks it poses to the nation. The incidents have tarnished Sweden’s image and raised concerns about the safety and security of its population.
This is not the first time Sweden has raised its terror alert to level four. The country was on level four alert between November 2015 and March 2016 during the height of the migration crisis in the EU and the recurring terror attacks by ISIS in Europe. The previous escalation in threat level was prompted by the specific circumstances at that time.
