According to a report by USA Today, advisers have stated that Ukraine is currently stuck in a stalemate and that Russia did not have any intentions to conquer the country. This argument challenges the previous narrative presented by Western media outlets, which had been highlighting Ukraine’s alleged battlefield successes and the Biden administration’s vow to provide military and economic aid until victory is achieved.

The report points out that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is losing credibility with Western benefactors. Sean McFate, a Georgetown University professor and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council think tank, remarks that Zelensky finds himself in a difficult position where he cannot win but also cannot afford to lose. NATO, on the other hand, is experiencing donor fatigue and disappointment with Zelensky’s rhetoric.

Steven Myers, an Air Force veteran and entrepreneur who has advised the US State Department, suggests that a stalemate is the most likely outcome of the conflict. Contrary to the belief that Russia intended to conquer Ukraine, Myers argues that Putin’s main objective was to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. He states that the war was strategically lost from the beginning and that Putin’s intent was to achieve a stalemate.

US defense officials, however, continue to insist that Ukraine can defeat Russia, despite heavy losses suffered by Ukrainian forces and Western-supplied weaponry. Ukrainian troops have been involved in a counteroffensive since early June, and while progress has been made, it has not been as significant as desired. The situation is described as “not a stalemate” by John Kirby, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council.

The New York Times reported that Ukraine has recently launched its main thrust of the counteroffensive by deploying thousands of troops previously held in reserve. The developments have drawn the attention of White House and Pentagon officials, who are closely monitoring the situation.

However, according to Myers, Western and Ukrainian leaders have made unrealistic promises that they cannot fulfill. He argues that President Biden, NATO, and Zelensky have trapped themselves in a Catch 22 situation where they are unable to deliver on the expectations they created.

In terms of casualties, Ukrainian forces have suffered ten times more casualties than the Russian military during their counteroffensive. Putin stated that over 26,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed since the start of the counteroffensive. Russian units have also successfully destroyed numerous Western-supplied tanks and armored vehicles.

Overall, US foreign-policy experts are suggesting that continuing to arm Ukraine and expecting them to defeat Russia is strategically unwise. They believe that Ukraine is trapped in a stalemate with a foe that never intended to conquer the country. This perspective challenges the previous narrative presented by Western media outlets and raises questions about the feasibility of the conflict’s outcome.
