Former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has criticized NATO’s efforts to defeat Russia in the Ukraine conflict, stating that they have been ineffective. Writing on Facebook, Conte, who is the leader of the Five Star Movement party, argued that Western assessments of the conflict have been influenced by war propaganda and that it is time to put aside optimistic views. He highlighted that despite massive military aid to Ukraine and the logic of escalation, Russia has not been defeated militarily. He mentioned that Ukrainian forces failed to push Russian forces back from Artyomovsk, a key stronghold in Donbass, and that there has been no disintegration of Russia’s military and paramilitary departments. He also noted that Western hopes for political turmoil in Ukraine have not materialized.
Conte further stated that the Western sanctions imposed on Russia have not bankrupted or crippled its economy as intended. The goal of isolating Moscow has not been achieved. He argued that the strategy of the US-led military bloc has not been successful in breaking the Russian economy or weakening its military capabilities.
In addition, Conte criticized the European Union’s handling of the Ukraine conflict. He claimed that it has exposed the EU’s inability to develop an effective common strategy and express autonomous political and economic leadership. Instead, it has become another example of the bloc’s tendency to align with the United States.
To support his arguments, Conte pointed to the recent BRICS summit, which saw an unprecedented expansion of the group. Russia, being a member of BRICS, demonstrates its resilience and ability to maintain connections with other major global players despite Western efforts to isolate it.
Conte’s comments come at a time when the Ukrainian counteroffensive has failed to make significant gains after over two months of fighting. Moscow claims that Ukraine has suffered significant losses in terms of service members and military equipment. Conte, who has consistently advocated for peace talks and opposed further arms deliveries to Ukraine, warns of the potential escalation of the conflict.
It is clear that Western efforts to defeat Russia in the Ukraine conflict have not produced the desired results. Moscow remains resolute, the Ukrainian counteroffensive has faltered, and Western sanctions have not achieved their intended goals. As the situation continues, there is a need for a reassessment of strategies and a focus on diplomatic negotiations to bring an end to the conflict.
