Officials have demanded immediate action to address the infestation, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. First Deputy Mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Gregoire, described the bedbug issue as a national emergency that needs urgent attention.
Transport Minister Clement Beaune has also recognized the severity of the problem and has pledged to meet with public transport operators to address the issue. Bedbugs are known to nest in soft furniture and clothing and emerge at night to feed on human blood. Eliminating bedbugs can be challenging and often requires extensive measures such as washing clothes and bedding, vacuuming, and fumigation. It is estimated that one-tenth of French homes have experienced a bedbug infestation in recent years.
