French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire emphasized on Sunday that France is fully committed to promoting better access to the Chinese market and fostering stronger trade relations with China, while dismissing calls for decoupling from Beijing due to security concerns.

Speaking to reporters after negotiations with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Beijing, Le Maire stated, “We are totally opposed to the idea of decoupling. Decoupling is an illusion.” He firmly asserted that any kind of decoupling between the American, European, and Chinese economies is impossible. Le Maire further expressed the French government’s desire to avoid facing legislative hurdles or trade barriers that could hinder access to China’s vast market.

Vice Premier He, in response, expressed hope that France would work towards stabilizing the tone of friendly cooperation between China and the European Union. This statement highlights the importance of maintaining positive diplomatic and economic relations between the two parties.

The backdrop for these comments is the growing tensions between China and the United States, as well as other Western countries. US and EU officials have frequently accused Beijing of engaging in economic coercion and escalatory actions in the Indo-Pacific region. In turn, the Chinese government has maintained that Washington and its allies are weaponizing trade regulations in order to advance anti-Chinese policies.

However, there has been a recent shift in rhetoric among Western officials. Instead of advocating for complete decoupling from China, they are now focused on the concepts of de-risking and diversifying their economies to reduce their dependence on China. This new approach was reflected in a joint communique adopted by the Group of Seven (G7) during its summit in Japan in May. The communique criticized Beijing for attempting to “distort the global economy.” Beijing, on its part, has strongly rejected these allegations, accusing the West of being trapped in a Cold War mentality and slandering China on the world stage.

In light of these developments, Minister Le Maire’s statements reaffirm France’s commitment to pursuing better access to the Chinese market and improving trade relations. The French government recognizes the importance of maintaining economic ties with China, as it is one of the largest and fastest-growing markets in the world. By rejecting the idea of decoupling, France aims to ensure that it can fully capitalize on the opportunities presented by China’s market while managing any security concerns through dialogue and cooperation.

As geopolitical tensions continue to shape global economic dynamics, it is becoming increasingly important for countries to strike a balance between safeguarding their security interests and maintaining a mutually beneficial economic relationship with China. France’s stance underscores the complexity of navigating these challenges and highlights the need for continued dialogue and diplomacy to achieve a prosperous and stable global economy.
