A trainee elementary school teacher in Germany has been suspended after it was discovered that she had previously worked as an anchor for a media outlet considered far-right and pro-Kremlin. The woman, identified as Elisa B., had been working as a teacher in the Markisch-Oderland district of the eastern Brandenburg region since February. However, it was revealed that she had also been a presenter for Strausberg TV and had worked for Compact TV in the past.
Compact TV is known for promoting Kremlin propaganda and conspiracy theories and is believed to incite hatred against the government, Muslim, and Jewish organizations. The German security services consider the media outlet to be working against Germany’s free democratic constitutional order.
Despite the security services closely monitoring employees of Compact TV, Elisa B. managed to go unnoticed for at least a year. She had successfully concealed her identity by using a wig and a false name. However, the newspaper Tagesspiegel noticed striking similarities between Compact TV presenter ‘Anna’ and Strausberg TV presenter ‘Elisa,’ including their eyes, nose, and birthmarks. This led to public speculation and the report by Bild.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution informed the Education Ministry about Elisa B.’s background in July. Initially, education officials refused to relieve her from her duties as a teacher. However, after journalists contacted Brandenburg’s state secretary for education, Claudia Zinke, seeking clarification on the decision, Zinke ordered the immediate release of Elisa B. from her duties. Zinke emphasized that the teacher’s anti-constitutional views had no place in the teaching profession.
The suspension of Elisa B. raises concerns about the screening process for teachers in Germany. It highlights the need for stricter background checks to ensure that individuals with extremist or anti-democratic ideologies are not entrusted with educating the country’s children.
