Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has faced criticism from Democratic rivals for her actions during a House Oversight Committee hearing into Hunter Biden’s alleged tax misdeeds. During the hearing, Greene displayed explicit images of Hunter Biden, which she claimed showed him engaging in sexual acts and making pornography. This move has been described as “deliberately provocative and sensationalistic and voyeuristic” by critics.
Greene has accused Hunter Biden of illegally using funds from his company to pay prostitutes. However, these claims were not substantiated by IRS whistleblower Joseph Ziegler during the hearing. The committee was receiving testimony from two IRS officials who were involved in the investigation into Hunter Biden’s tax affairs. Gary Shapley, a fellow IRS staff member, has alleged that the Justice Department obstructed the investigation.
Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, recently reached an agreement with federal prosecutors to plead guilty to two minor tax crimes. This agreement is likely to result in him avoiding jail time. Despite this, Greene continues to make allegations against Hunter Biden, using explicit images as supposed evidence.
Following the conclusion of the hearing, Democratic representative Jamie Raskin criticized Greene’s presentation, stating that it was “completely irrelevant” to the committee’s objectives and did not contribute to the hearing’s purpose. Raskin described Greene’s actions as “deliberately provocative and sensationalistic and voyeuristic,” asserting that they were an assault on the dignity of the committee. Abbe Lowell, an attorney for Hunter Biden, condemned Greene’s move as political theater and harassment of a private person’s personal life.
Aaron Fritschner, a staffer for congressman Don Beyer, also spoke out against Greene’s actions, claiming that she had distributed an email newsletter containing the explicit images to her subscribers. Fritschner raised concerns that minors may have been exposed to these images, as there was no age screen on Greene’s newsletter subscription page. This has led to allegations that she may have used taxpayer-funded resources to send explicit material to minors.
The explicit photos of Hunter Biden have been widely circulated online in recent months. They are said to have originated from a personal laptop that Hunter Biden submitted for repair in April 2019. The leaked data from the laptop has been used by Republicans to criticize the Biden family and their foreign business dealings.
Overall, Greene’s actions during the committee hearing have been met with widespread criticism. Critics argue that her display of explicit images was unnecessary, inappropriate, and did not contribute to the investigation or the committee’s objectives. The controversy surrounding the use of explicit material and allegations against Hunter Biden continues to fuel political debates and contentious discussions.
