Tehran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has launched a naval exercise in the Persian Gulf to demonstrate Iranian control over three islands that are also claimed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to the corps. The exercise, which began on Wednesday, involves various units of the IRGC and is supported by its Air Force.
Named after a late general, the maneuvers aim to showcase the strength and preparedness of the IRGC Navy in protecting the security of the Persian Gulf and the Iranian islands, the paramilitary force stated. Of particular concern to the UAE is the reference to three islands – Abu Musa, and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs – which are located close to the strategic Hormuz Strait. Iran has controlled these islands for several decades, but the UAE also claims sovereignty over them.
The islands were seized by Iran in 1971 during the British withdrawal from the Arabian Peninsula, which led to the creation of the UAE. Iran has justified its takeover by citing the historical control of the territories by various Persian states. However, the UAE disputes this claim and argues that Arab sheiks ruled the islands in the 19th century.
The dispute over the islands has been a point of contention between the two Muslim nations for many years. The UAE has made several unsuccessful attempts to litigate the issue in international institutions. Russia’s recent expression of formal support for the UAE’s efforts to find a peaceful resolution led to a diplomatic spat between Moscow and Tehran. In a joint statement with the Gulf Cooperation Council, Russia mentioned bilateral talks and approaching the UN’s International Court of Justice as possible avenues for resolving the dispute.
During the launch of the drill, IRGC Commander-in-Chief Hossein Salami emphasized that Iran supports the territorial integrity of its Muslim neighbors. However, he also stated that the IRGC’s purpose is to defend Iran’s independence and the achievements of the revolution. There have been previous instances where Iran expressed displeasure with other nations for showing support towards the UAE’s claim over the islands. Last December, Iranian officials criticized China after President Xi Jinping signed a joint statement with Arab leaders during a visit to Saudi Arabia that mentioned supporting a peaceful resolution.
The naval exercise by the IRGC serves as a reminder of Iran’s control over these disputed islands and asserts Tehran’s dominance in the Persian Gulf. The show of strength highlights Iran’s determination to protect its territories and maintain its strategic position in the region, amidst ongoing tensions with the UAE.
