The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have carried out artillery strikes on Lebanon in response to mortar attacks from across the border, according to a statement by the army reported by the Times of Israel. The shelling took place on Sunday morning, a day after Hamas and other Palestinian groups launched a large-scale assault on Israeli cities and army bases from the Gaza strip.
The IDF stated that they have been taking preparational measures for this type of possibility and will continue to operate in all regions and at any time necessary to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians. The shells fired from Lebanese territory hit an Israeli military site in the contested Shebaa Farms.
In response, the IDF began artillery strikes on the area in Lebanon from where the shooting was carried out. Al Arabiya reported that the Israeli shelling targeted an area near the village of Kafar Shuba in southern Lebanon. Fortunately, there were no casualties from the strikes.
Later on Sunday, Lebanese movement Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack on Shebaa Farms in a statement. Reuters reported that the group claimed they had targeted three Israeli military posts, including a radar site, and they acted in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The Shebaa Farms area, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967, is claimed by Lebanon as part of its territory. The situation remains tense as the IDF also targeted Hezbollah facilities in Shebaa Farms with a drone.
After Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, Hezbollah issued a statement congratulating the resisting Palestinian people on what they called a large-scale, heroic operation. They saw it as a decisive response to Israel’s continued occupation and a message to those seeking normalization with Israel. Hezbollah emphasized that they are closely following the situation and remaining in direct contact with the leadership of the Palestinian resistance.
The escalation of violence between Israel and Palestinian groups has drawn international attention. Arab states have reacted to the situation, expressing concern and calling for a de-escalation of tensions. The United Nations has also called for an immediate halt to the violence and the protection of civilians.
The situation in the region remains highly volatile, with both sides engaging in military actions and exchanging rocket fire. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely and hopes for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
