A member of the Knesset from Israel’s ruling party, Likud, has called for the use of nuclear-capable missiles to “flatten” Gaza in response to recent attacks by Hamas. Revital Gotliv, the lawmaker, made these remarks on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Jericho Missile! Jericho Missile! Strategic alert. before considering the introduction of forces. Doomsday weapon! This is my opinion. May God preserve all our strength.” She expressed her belief that using Jericho missiles would show strength and restore Israel’s security.
The Jericho missile is an Israeli intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) known for its long-range capabilities. Israel is widely believed to possess a significant number of nuclear warheads, although the government has neither confirmed nor denied it.
Gotliv continued her provocative remarks by stating, “Only an explosion that shakes the Middle East will restore this country’s dignity, strength, and security! It’s time to kiss doomsday. Shooting powerful missiles without limit. Not flattening a neighborhood.” She emphasized the need for action and suggested that Israel should not hold back in its response to Hamas.
X flagged Gotliv’s posts as potentially violating rules against violent speech but deemed them to be in the public interest, so they were not deleted. Gotliv also made other statements urging the Israeli government to relentlessly shell Gaza and crush it. Additionally, she praised US President Joe Biden for his strong stance against Hamas, stating that his speech showed solidarity with Israel’s intent to eliminate the group.
The recent escalation in tensions began when Hamas, a Palestinian militant group controlling much of Gaza, launched “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” by firing rockets and sending commandos into Israeli territory. In response, the Israel Defense Force conducted airstrikes in Gaza and cut off all utilities.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Israeli authorities reported at least 900 deaths and 2,600 injuries, while Palestinian authorities in Gaza claimed at least 830 deaths and 4,250 injuries since the outbreak of hostilities.
It is important to note that these remarks by Gotliv reflect her personal opinion and do not necessarily represent the official stance of the Israeli government or Likud party. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a complex and sensitive issue, and the use of violent rhetoric only serves to further escalate tensions and hinder peace efforts. Dialogue, diplomacy, and international cooperation are essential for finding a just and lasting solution to the conflict.
