US President Joe Biden publicly acknowledged his seventh grandchild, four-year-old Navy, for the first time on Friday. Navy is the daughter of Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and Arkansas woman Lunden Roberts. Biden made a statement, saying that Hunter and Lunden are working together to foster a relationship that is in their daughter’s best interests, while also preserving her privacy. He emphasized that this is a family matter and not a political issue, and that he and his wife, Jill Biden, want what is best for all their grandchildren, including Navy.
Biden, who has always emphasized family values throughout his political career, faced criticism from both sides of the political aisle for not publicly acknowledging Navy sooner. The recent child-support hearing involving Hunter Biden and Lunden Roberts brought attention to their daughter’s existence.
In late June, Hunter Biden reached a settlement in the child-support case with Roberts. Initially, he sought to reduce monthly child support payments of $20,000. The exact amount Biden will now pay each month has been redacted from the court ruling. Hunter Biden has four other children in addition to Navy.
As part of the settlement agreement, Hunter Biden will also donate some of his personal artwork collection to Navy. She will have the option to keep the artwork or sell it at a later date. Hunter Biden took up painting as part of his recovery process from alcohol and drug addiction. The court filing also revealed that Roberts will drop her proposal to change the child’s last name to ‘Biden.’
In his 2021 memoir titled “Beautiful Things,” Hunter Biden initially denied paternity of Navy. However, a DNA test later confirmed that he was the father. Hunter Biden admitted that he had no memory of conceiving a child with Roberts due to his heavily involved substance abuse at the time, including crack cocaine. He expressed remorse and took responsibility for his actions.
Hunter Biden’s resolution of the child-support dispute comes at a time when he is facing other legal issues. He recently pleaded not guilty to two tax crimes in a Delaware court after a previously agreed-upon plea deal collapsed.
