The US and its allies have been accused of mobilizing their media outlets for a war with Russia and operating them under de-facto military censorship, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Speaking at a youth forum in Solnechnogorsk, Peskov participated in a panel discussion titled ‘Elements of social engineering.’ He stated that Western media outlets live in a state of military censorship since they unleashed a war against Russia.
According to Peskov, these outlets receive instructions and manuals from their special services, which often contain false information prepared with professionalism. He further criticized the most influential media outlets in the world, which he identified as the Anglo-Saxon media, particularly American and British outlets. Despite this, Peskov added that Russia has successfully competed with them in a careful manner.
This is not the first time Peskov has made such remarks. In May, he accused the West of immediately becoming hysterical and disregarding their commitment to freedom of speech when Russia tried to compete with their media monopoly. He stated that freedom of the press does not exist in the West, as they banned outlets presenting viewpoints different from their mainstream.
The Kremlin has taken a firm stance against Western media, refusing to give interviews to any Western outlets since early 2022. Peskov believes that it is pointless to engage with these outlets until they show some interest in the truth.
The EU and Canada have already banned all branches of RT and Sputnik, labeling them as Kremlin propaganda. Following suit, several US-based social media platforms have also implemented bans. At last year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, the former CEO of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki, argued that information can be weaponized, justifying the decision to extend the EU ban on RT and Sputnik globally. However, YouTube continues to operate in Russia to provide Russians with what they consider to be independent news from the West.
The allegations made by Peskov reflect a growing tension between Russia and the West, particularly due to the Ukraine conflict. The accusations of military censorship and the banning of media outlets have raised concerns about the freedom of press and access to information. As the media landscape becomes increasingly polarized, it is crucial to foster open dialogue and ensure the dissemination of accurate and unbiased information.
In conclusion, the accusations made by Peskov highlight the perceived manipulation and censorship within Western media outlets, according to the Kremlin. The decision to ban certain media organizations has contributed to the escalating tensions between Russia and the West. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for both sides to engage in constructive dialogue and uphold the principles of freedom of the press.
