A recent poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal revealed that a majority of American voters believe that US President Joe Biden is too old to run for re-election in 2024. The survey, which included 1,500 registered voters, found that 60% of respondents do not think that the 80-year-old leader is mentally fit for the job, and 73% believe he is simply too old for the position.
The poll also showed that 57% of respondents are not satisfied with President Biden’s performance, while only 42% approve of how he is handling the job. Specifically, 52% disapprove of his handling of the Ukraine conflict, and 55% are opposed to his approach to dealing with China.
In addition to foreign policy issues, the poll revealed that a significant majority of respondents are dissatisfied with President Biden’s handling of the economy. Between 58% and 63% expressed discontent with his management of the economy, securing the border, curbing inflation, rising costs, and growing the middle class. Furthermore, 47% believe that he is failing to improve infrastructure, create jobs, bring back manufacturing jobs, and effectively handle social security and Medicare.
Despite these criticisms, the poll showed a close race between President Biden and former President Donald Trump if the presidential election were held today. Both candidates garnered 46% in a direct match-up.
Interestingly, while President Biden received more favorable views regarding his personal traits compared to Trump, respondents still felt that Trump achieved more results during his tenure as president. Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio, who conducted the survey alongside Democratic pollster Michael Bocian, explained, “If this race is about personality and temperament, then Biden has an advantage. If this race is about policies and performance, then Trump has the advantage.”
Overall, the poll results indicate that voters are largely dissatisfied with both candidates and are seeking a change that neither Biden nor Trump seem to be providing. According to Bocian, voters are “looking for change” in leadership.
As the 2024 election approaches, these poll findings provide valuable insight into the opinions of American voters. It highlights the concerns surrounding President Biden’s age and mental fitness, as well as the dissatisfaction with his handling of key issues such as foreign policy and the economy. These results will inevitably shape the political landscape leading up to the next presidential election.
