A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 has devastated a remote area of Nepal, resulting in a rising death toll and numerous injuries. The earthquake’s epicenter was located near Ramidanda village in Nepal’s Jajarkot district, approximately 400km west of the capital, Kathmandu. Its tremors were felt in various parts of northern India, including New Delhi.
Reports indicate that urban centers in Nepal’s Jajarkot district, such as Bheri, Nalgad, Kushe, Barekot, and Chedagad, have been severely affected by the earthquake. Chief District Officer Suresh Sunar stated that all security forces in the district have been mobilized for search and rescue efforts.
Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, expressed his condolences over the loss of life and damages caused by the earthquake. He promptly activated all of the country’s security agencies to initiate immediate rescue and relief operations for the injured. On Saturday morning, the Prime Minister headed towards the affected site to assess the situation firsthand.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief over the disaster via social media. In a post on X, he conveyed his solidarity with the people of Nepal and offered India’s support and assistance. He expressed his thoughts for the bereaved families and wished a quick recovery for the injured.
This recent earthquake is yet another reminder of Nepal’s vulnerability to seismic activities. The country is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the ridge between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are constantly shifting.
Nepal has endured devastating earthquakes in the past. In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude quake struck the nation, resulting in the loss of nearly 9,000 lives and the destruction of over half a million homes. Last year, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in the Doti district, near Jajarkot, claimed the lives of six people.
The government and authorities are now focused on search and rescue operations, as well as providing immediate relief and support to the affected areas. International aid and assistance are expected to be mobilized, with neighboring countries offering their support to Nepal during this challenging time.
As news of this earthquake spreads, people are sharing the story and expressing their solidarity on social media platforms. The international community stands with Nepal, ready to extend any necessary assistance to help the country recover and rebuild from this tragic event.
