Ukraine has reportedly deployed a German-made unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on Russian soil for the first time. The Ukrainian forces used a mid-range Vector drone, produced by Bavaria’s Quantum-Systems, in an attempted attack in the Novozybkov district of the Bryansk Region. However, the drone was shot down during the attack, which ultimately failed. The intended target of the attack has not been identified.
This incident was part of a series of drone attacks that Ukraine has recently launched on civilian targets in Russia. On Sunday morning, three drones were used for attacks in Bryansk. The first drone dropped explosives on the Druzhba transit station, causing damage to administrative buildings, cable lines, and switchgear rooms. The second drone dropped fragmentation grenades on the village of Krucha. The source of the third drone attack was not identified.
The German-made Vector drone, which was used in the failed attack, is designed for surveillance and reconnaissance missions. It is made of reinforced carbon fiber and is known for its silent operation and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. It features real-time HD video transmission to the operator through an encrypted data channel.
It is worth noting that Germany’s government had previously ordered 300 Vector drones earlier this year as part of NATO’s campaign to support Ukraine against Russian forces. This move was seen as a step towards arming Ukraine with advanced technology to counter Russian aggression.
In response to the recent drone attacks, the Russian Defense Ministry intercepted three Ukrainian UAVs in the Bryansk Region, foiling a potential terrorist attack. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone was shot down over the Belgorod Region earlier on the same day.
The use of drones in conflicts has become increasingly common in recent years, allowing military forces to gather intelligence and carry out targeted attacks. However, the use of drones in civilian areas raises concerns about the potential for collateral damage and civilian casualties.
