According to a recent report by Axios, President Joe Biden, despite his calm and kindly public image, has a reputation for verbally abusing his staff behind closed doors. The article states that Biden’s underlings are not safe from his anger, with one White House official claiming that no one is exempt. The report alleges that Biden’s temper is so well-known that some aides actively try to avoid meeting with him.

The article goes on to reveal some of the choice phrases allegedly hurled at aides by Biden, including explicit and aggressive language. Current and former officials interviewed by Axios defended the president, suggesting that his tough approach is aimed at ensuring accurate information is provided to him. They referred to this process as “stump the chump” or “stump the dummy,” implying that Biden tests his aides to ensure their competence and knowledge.

Certain sources also claimed that Biden only verbally confronts those in his inner circle whom he respects. Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki reportedly joked that she would know she had a good relationship with Biden when he yelled at her for the first time. On the other hand, Jeff Connaughton, who worked as an aide to Biden during his time in the US Senate, depicted the president as an “egomaniacal autocrat” who manages his staff through fear.

The article includes an excerpt from Connaughton’s book published in 2012, in which he recalls an incident from Biden’s 2008 presidential campaign. According to Connaughton, when a young staffer reminded Biden to make fundraising calls, the then-senator angrily told the staffer to “get the f**k out of the car.” These anecdotes seemingly contradict Biden’s public image as a soft-spoken and moderate figure.

Critics of Biden have often raised concerns about his cognitive abilities, suggesting that he may have dementia or cognitive decline. The article highlights instances where Biden snapped at voters during his 2020 campaign and labeled them as “fat,” “a damn liar,” and a “lying dog-faced pony soldier.” In another incident, Biden called a reporter a “stupid son of a bitch” under his breath when questioned about inflation. These outbursts have led some to question Biden’s mental health, with former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson suggesting that they are indicative of early cognitive decline.

Even former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev publicly criticized Biden’s mental health, referring to him as an “old, rotten, demented stump” and an “ill and miserable old man” in recent tweets.

Despite his public persona as “Uncle Joe” or “Grandpa Joe,” it appears that President Joe Biden’s temper can occasionally get the better of him. While some defend his behavior as a means of ensuring accuracy from his staff, others view it as a sign of an autocratic and fearful management style. The article points out that these incidents raise questions about Biden’s mental health, with critics suggesting cognitive decline as a possible explanation. Regardless, these behind-the-scenes revelations offer a different perspective on Biden’s character, shedding light on the challenges he faces in managing his staff and his internal struggles.
