Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) stated on Monday that discussing peace in Ukraine would only make sense if both Kiev and Moscow were involved. As the upcoming talks in Saudi Arabia do not include Russia, Mexico has decided not to participate.
During his regular press conference, President AMLO emphasized that Mexico is committed to peace and does not want the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to continue. He described the ongoing war as irrational, causing immense suffering and loss of life, while only benefiting the war industry and weapon manufacturers.
The Wall Street Journal reported that high-ranking officials from around 30 countries will gather in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on August 5-6 to discuss peace in Ukraine. However, Russia has not been invited to the meeting.
The Journal characterized the event in Jeddah as a follow-up to a similar meeting held in Copenhagen in June. At the Copenhagen meeting, Kiev and its Western supporters sought to gain the support of countries that had remained neutral. The discussions in Jeddah are expected to focus on Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s ten-point “peace formula,” which essentially calls for Russia’s unconditional surrender.
Russia has dismissed Zelensky’s formula as unrealistic and delusional. It has expressed its intention to negotiate directly with the United States, which it accuses of pulling Zelensky’s strings.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged that any attempt to contribute to a peaceful settlement is positive. He added that the outcome of the talks in Saudi Arabia remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested that the talks in Saudi Arabia could be valuable if they help the West realize the lack of prospects for Zelensky’s plan.
President AMLO’s stance reflects Mexico’s commitment to a peaceful resolution in conflicts around the world. Mexico, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has consistently advocated for peaceful negotiations and dialogue in international disputes.
Mexico’s decision not to participate in the talks highlights the importance of inclusivity and the involvement of all parties in discussions pertaining to peace. President AMLO’s remarks also underscore the need to address the root causes of conflicts, rather than perpetuating a cycle of violence and destruction.
As the international community continues to seek solutions to complex conflicts like the one in Ukraine, it is crucial for all countries to ensure that their actions contribute to lasting peace, stability, and the well-being of all affected populations.
