Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has denied that Moscow has been misusing the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to spread its propaganda online. Musk’s statement came in response to a European Commission report that claimed Russia was conducting disinformation campaigns on social media platforms. In a response to independent journalist Glenn Greenwald, Musk wrote on X, “Where is all this pro-Russia propaganda? We don’t see it.” Greenwald, who has been critical of what he sees as Western governments’ efforts to stifle public debate and censor dissent online under the pretext of countering Russian influence, had shared his views on this topic on his talk show, ‘System Update.’

The EU report had criticized Musk’s ownership of X, particularly following his reinstatement of the account of ex-Russian president Dmitry Medvedev in April. The report claimed that the reach of “pro-Kremlin accounts” on the platform had grown by 36% between January and May. However, Greenwald called the report “dubious and flagrantly fraudulent,” expressing frustration that coverage of it by The Washington Post had gone viral without people actually reading the article or the study it was based on.

The Washington Post had framed the report’s findings as confirmation that Musk had allowed Russian disinformation to spread since acquiring X last year. The report also highlighted Musk’s decision not to suppress accounts associated with the Russian government, a policy that sets X apart from other major platforms.

Musk’s denial of pro-Russia propaganda on X adds to the ongoing debate over social media platforms’ role in spreading disinformation. Critics argue that platforms should do more to combat misinformation and curb the influence of malign actors, while others emphasize the importance of free speech and express concern over potential censorship.

The European Commission report is part of the wider discussion on the influence of foreign actors on social media platforms. It reflects concerns about the spread of disinformation and its impact on public opinion, particularly during election campaigns. Efforts to address this issue have led to calls for stricter regulations and increased transparency from social media platforms.

As the debate continues, it remains important to critically evaluate the information we encounter online and to consider multiple sources and perspectives. The proliferation of misinformation and the manipulation of public opinion is a complex problem that requires collaborative efforts from governments, tech companies, and users themselves.
