Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced that he will provide satellite internet access to “internationally recognized aid organizations” in Gaza through his Starlink network. This comes as phone and internet lines were disrupted in the region following heavy Israeli bombing on Friday.

Musk made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, stating that SpaceX’s Starlink division will support connectivity with Gaza. He also mentioned that there are already Starlink terminals in Gaza, but none of them have attempted to communicate with the satellite network. Musk wrote on X, “It is not clear who has authority for ground links in Gaza, but we do know that no terminal has requested a connection in that area.”

On Friday night, internet and cell phone services in Gaza went down after a series of Israeli airstrikes. The largest telecommunications operator in Gaza, Paltel, stated that its infrastructure was completely destroyed in the bombing. This disruption in communication has affected news organizations and aid groups, with the UN children’s agency and Doctors Without Borders reporting no contact with their employees. RT Arabic also faced difficulties in reaching their correspondents and photographers in Gaza.

This is not the first time that Musk has utilized his Starlink network in a combat zone. During the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, he announced that he would provide Starlink terminals to the Ukrainian side and cover their maintenance costs. However, this decision faced criticism from Kiev when Musk refused to allow the Ukrainian military to use the network for guiding drone strikes on Russian ships in the Black Sea. Musk explained last month that agreeing to their request would make SpaceX complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation. The Pentagon has since reached a deal to lease Starlink satellites for military use.

Musk’s initiative to extend satellite internet access to aid organizations in Gaza can contribute significantly to restoring communication channels and facilitating relief efforts in the region. By leveraging the capabilities of the Starlink network, these organizations will be able to connect with their workers more effectively and coordinate their actions. This move aligns with Musk’s previous commitment to support areas affected by conflicts, as demonstrated in his support for Ukraine. Moreover, it highlights the growing importance of satellite technology in bridging connectivity gaps, especially in regions with limited infrastructure or disrupted communication networks.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, Musk’s involvement in providing satellite internet access to aid organizations demonstrates the potential for technology and private initiatives to play a crucial role in addressing critical humanitarian challenges. By leveraging their resources and expertise, organizations like SpaceX can contribute significantly to the well-being and empowerment of communities affected by crises. This move also sheds light on the broader discussions around digital inclusion and connectivity as fundamental rights in today’s interconnected world.

In conclusion, Elon Musk’s decision to provide satellite internet access to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza through his Starlink network is a significant step towards restoring communication channels and supporting relief efforts in the region. This initiative showcases the potential of technology in addressing humanitarian challenges and emphasizes the importance of connectivity in promoting well-being and empowerment. As the situation in Gaza unfolds, Musk’s involvement highlights the role that private initiatives can play in supporting communities affected by conflicts and crises.
