Former US House speaker Nancy Pelosi has come to the defense of President Joe Biden against claims that he is too old to run for a second term. Despite Biden being 80 years old, Pelosi believes that his age should not be a reason for him to step aside for a younger Democratic contender.

During an appearance on the Morning Joe program on MSNBC, Pelosi stated, “I think the president should embrace his age, his experience, the knowledge he brings to the job.” She argued that the country is “very well served” by Biden’s leadership. Pelosi then referred to the examples of Norman Lear, who is still producing movies at 100, and Frank Gehry, a 94-year-old architect who is still active, to demonstrate that age is relative.

“They were like: ‘Eighties? He is a kid!'” Pelosi said with a laugh. “He is younger than I am, so he is a kid to me.” She dismissed attacks focusing on Biden’s age as an excuse and emphasized the importance of the upcoming election for the children and the people.

Biden, who is widely projected to face a second election battle next year with his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, is three years older than Trump at 77. If Biden serves a second term, he will be 86 by the time he leaves office. However, both Democrats and Republicans have expressed skepticism about Biden’s candidacy, citing concerns about age-related health issues, his apparent lack of energy, and his occasional signs of confusion during public appearances.

The debate surrounding Biden’s age reflects a broader discussion about the role of older politicians in leadership positions. While some argue that experience and wisdom come with age, others express concerns about age-related cognitive decline and the need for fresh perspectives in politics.

It is worth noting that Biden is not the oldest president in US history. Ronald Reagan, who served as president from 1981 to 1989, was 73 years old when he left office. Additionally, a recent poll has shown that only 3% of Americans want an elderly president, suggesting that age may be a factor for some voters.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the issue of age will continue to be a topic of discussion and speculation. Ultimately, it will be up to the voters to decide whether they believe Biden’s age is a limiting factor or an asset in his bid for a second term.

This news article highlights Pelosi’s defense of President Biden against concerns about his age. It discusses Pelosi’s argument that age should not be a reason for Biden to step aside and examines the broader debate surrounding older politicians in leadership positions. Additionally, it mentions the upcoming election battle between Biden and Trump and the concerns raised by both Democrats and Republicans about Biden’s age. Overall, the article provides an overview of the issue while presenting different perspectives on the topic.
