Romania is taking proactive measures to protect its border with Ukraine by deploying radars and 600 soldiers, according to General Gheorghița Vlad, the deputy chief of Romania’s general staff. In addition, the Romanian Armed Forces are prepared to shoot down Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), he stated on Friday. General Vlad made these remarks during an interview with the Swedish SVT 2 broadcaster. He also mentioned that discussions took place with other NATO member states regarding a potential response to possible Russian aggression.

To strengthen the defense line in the northern part of Dobrogea, Romania’s eastern coastal region that borders Ukraine, around 600 soldiers will be deployed, General Vlad said. The deployment will also include additional radar systems, and local air defenses have been put on alert. The border between Ukraine and Romania runs along the Danube River, and this strategic move aims to fortify Romania’s defense capabilities in that area.

When asked about Romania’s readiness to use its air-defense systems against Russian UAVs, General Vlad emphasized their preparedness to use all military power to defend Romanian territory. The exact response, however, would depend on the level of threat faced. This signifies Romania’s commitment to safeguarding its borders and ensuring the safety and security of its people.

In response to the recent discovery of suspected Russian drone wreckage in the area, the Romanian Defense Ministry took immediate action. Flights over northern Dobrogea, particularly near the border with Ukraine, were restricted. Furthermore, the ministry announced plans to construct two bomb shelters in the Plauru-Ceatalchioi area, located just across the Danube from Izmail, Ukraine’s largest river port in the Danube Delta.

President Klaus Iohannis expressed his concerns about the situation, stating that if it is confirmed that the wreckage belongs to a Russian drone, it would be deemed completely unacceptable and a serious violation of Romania’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This incident further emphasizes the importance of Romania’s defensive measures and their commitment to protecting their borders.

It is worth noting that initially, the Romanian Defense Ministry denied the claims made by Kiev that a Russian drone had crashed in Romania during an attack on Izmail. However, as investigations continue, the Ministry may release further information regarding the incident. As of now, there has been no comment from Moscow regarding the alleged drone crash.

The increased tensions between Russia and Ukraine have been a cause for concern. Russia has been targeting port infrastructure in Odessa and other Ukrainian Black Sea towns since July. These actions followed an attack by Kiev’s seaborne drones on the bridge connecting Crimea to mainland Russia. This attack resulted in casualties, causing heightened tensions between the two countries.

In conclusion, Romania’s decision to deploy radars and soldiers to its border with Ukraine demonstrates its commitment to protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The readiness to shoot down Russian UAVs and the deployment of additional forces in the Danube Delta region highlights the seriousness of the situation. Romania’s close coordination with NATO member states signifies its determination to respond effectively to any potential aggression. As tensions persist in the region, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution.
