North Korea has issued a warning that Washington’s close military ties with South Korea are bringing the region closer to a nuclear war. The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) argued that the ongoing 11-day US-South Korean exercise, known as “Ulchi Freedom Shield,” is actually a rehearsal for “an actual war to invade the North.” The KCNA further stated that the “aggressive character of the drill is becoming ever more conspicuous,” and if the US and its allies implement the principles agreed upon during the exercise, “the possibility of an outbreak of a thermonuclear war on the Korean Peninsula will become more realistic.”
This warning comes after President Joe Biden hosted South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at Camp David on Friday. In a joint statement, the three leaders vowed to increase military ties and “bring our trilateral security cooperation to new heights.” They also condemned Pyongyang’s “unprecedented number” of ballistic missile tests and accused North Korea of cyberattacks.
Traditionally, North Korea views US exercises with South Korea and Japan as a threat. However, Washington maintains that these maneuvers and drills are purely defensive in nature. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, which began on Monday, includes over 30 separate exercises that combine computer-simulated wargames with field training. The US Navy stated that the drill would help solidify the role of the US-South Korean alliance as the linchpin of peace and security in the region. Colonel Lee Sung-jun, spokesman for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, added that the exercise is aimed at countering the advancing threats from North Korea.
In response to these exercises, Pyongyang has conducted its own weapons tests, launching projectiles into the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. On Tuesday, the Japanese Coast Guard reported that North Korea had notified them of a plan to launch a satellite into space later in the month. It is important to note that North Korea’s previous satellite launch in May ended in failure.
As tensions continue to rise in the region, the international community is closely watching the situation. The US, South Korea, and Japan reaffirm their commitment to maintain a strong defense and security alliance, but North Korea’s warnings raise concerns about the potential for a catastrophic escalation.
