However, he also cautioned against simply waiting for a miraculous resolution, stating that Europe should take action instead.
Orban criticized the European approach to the conflict, pointing out that a substantial amount of European money has been spent to support Ukraine, yet peace has not been achieved. Although it is unclear whether Orban was referring to dollars or euros, data from Germany’s Kiel Institute for the World Economy indicates that EU institutions and EU nations pledged a total of €131.9 billion ($139.8 billion) for Ukraine between January 2022 and July 2023. Additionally, countries like the UK, Norway, and Switzerland, which are not part of the EU, pledged an extra €23.31 billion ($24.8 billion) over the same period. This brings the total amount of European commitments to €155.21 billion ($165.66 billion).
Orban has long maintained that military confrontation with Russia in Ukraine is a mistake. He has repeatedly called for an end to arming Kiev and has emphasized the need for peace negotiations with Russia. He believes that a military solution to the conflict is not feasible.
