Pakistan has expressed its support for Denmark’s proposal to criminalize the public desecration of the Quran. The burning of the Muslim holy book has led to widespread protests and diplomatic tensions between several Nordic countries and Muslim-majority nations.

In a statement posted on its website, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry stated that it considers the Danish government’s decision to be a step in the right direction. It has always maintained that the desecration and burning of holy scriptures constitute an act of religious hatred that should not be allowed under the pretense of freedom of expression, opinion, or protest. The statement further emphasized the hope that Denmark’s action would lead to effective legislation against the desecration of the Quran and other divine books, encouraging other countries to follow suit.

The move by Pakistan comes after Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard unveiled a plan to combat the desecration of religious texts by expanding the existing ban on burning foreign flags. Under the new proposal, it would be illegal to burn the Quran or the Bible in public. This marks a departure from the Danish government’s previous stance, which considered the burning of the Quran as protected under freedom of expression.

According to Hummelgaard, offenders would face fines and up to two years in prison. The bill is set to be formally introduced on September 1. The desecration of the Quran by activists in Denmark and neighboring Sweden has sparked outrage across the Muslim world, leading to intense protests in various countries. In July, the Swedish Embassy building in Baghdad was stormed after a Quran was set on fire outside a mosque in Stockholm.

While Denmark’s decision has been praised by Pakistan, it remains to be seen how other countries will respond to this development. The issue of Quran burning has been a contentious one, with many Muslim-majority nations calling for strong action against those who engage in such acts. The protection of religious texts is of great importance to these countries, as they view any form of desecration as a direct affront to their faith and the beliefs of millions of Muslims worldwide.

Efforts to curb Quran burning are seen as necessary to prevent further tensions and maintain peaceful relations between nations. Pakistan’s positive reaction to Denmark’s proposal signifies a potential shift towards a more global consensus on the issue. It sends a strong message that the international community recognizes the significance of religious texts and the need to protect them from acts of desecration.

In conclusion, Pakistan’s support for Denmark’s decision reflects a growing recognition of the importance of safeguarding religious texts. The proposed legislation aims to deter acts of Quran burning and promote religious harmony. The international community will closely monitor the response of other countries and their willingness to follow Denmark’s lead in addressing this sensitive issue.
