RT has officially opened submissions for the 2023 Khaled Alkhateb International Memorial Awards, which recognize outstanding journalism and reporting from conflict zones and in the field of humanitarian journalism. Entries in all formats, including text and video, are now accepted. The awards are open to journalists from any country and can be submitted in any language. Both freelancers and journalists working for traditional or alternative media platforms are encouraged to apply.

The deadline for submissions is set for October 30, 2023. The winners of the awards, which come with a monetary prize of 200,000 rubles, will be announced in December of the same year. The Khaled Alkhateb International Memorial Awards offers four categories for entry: ‘Best Video Journalism From A Conflict Zone’, ‘Best Written Journalism From A Conflict Zone’, ‘Best Humanitarian Video Journalism’, and ‘Best Humanitarian Written Journalism’.

The categories for conflict zone reporting acknowledge the importance of covering the day-to-day events, complexities, and consequences of armed conflict. Journalists are encouraged to shed light on the human stories behind these conflicts and explore the impact on communities and civilians. The humanitarian journalism categories recognize outstanding reporting on efforts to assist civilians and refugees. This includes coverage of post-war recovery, as well as the long-term consequences conflicts have on ordinary people.

Established by RT in 2018, the Khaled Alkhateb International Memorial Awards honor the memory of Khaled Alkhateb, a 25-year-old RT Arabic stringer who lost his life while reporting on the fighting between Syrian government forces and terrorists in Homs, Syria, in 2017. In its fifth anniversary year, the awards focused on coverage of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. Submissions from previous years have come from 25 countries and in ten different languages, highlighting conflicts in Yemen, Iran, Syria, Libya, Iraq, the Philippines, and Mozambique.

The awards aim to provide recognition and support to journalists who risk their lives to report on conflicts and the humanitarian challenges associated with them. By celebrating their contributions, the Khaled Alkhateb International Memorial Awards underscore the importance of independent journalism and the vital role it plays in informing the public about the realities of conflict.

Those interested in sharing the news about the awards can do so on social media platforms and can also follow RT on Telegram for more updates and information.
