The North Korean military has revealed a new “tactical attack submarine” that has the capability to launch nuclear missiles, according to state-run media outlet, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The submarine, named “Hero Kim Kun Ok,” was showcased at a military ceremony attended by leader Kim Jong-un and several top defense officials.

Kim described the submarine as one of the core offensive assets of the North Korean naval force. He emphasized that the development of this weapon is part of their strategic plan to enhance the modernity of their underwater and surface forces. Furthermore, Kim stated that this development is crucial in achieving their goal of nuclear weaponization of the Navy, and ultimately, turning North Korea into an advanced maritime power.

In a separate event, Kim personally inspected the newly unveiled submarine to familiarize himself with its weapon system and its underwater operational capability. KCNA reported that the submarine will be deployed to the East Sea Fleet of the North Korean Navy.

Additionally, Kim announced that Pyongyang is working on transforming existing submarines to be equipped with atomic weapons. He referred to this as an urgent task, underlining the importance of strengthening their nuclear capabilities.

This news comes amid heightened tensions between North Korea and the United States. Recently, the US stationed its nuclear submarine off the coast of South Korea, a move that has been met with strong opposition from Pyongyang. North Korea warned that this deployment would only escalate the regional military tension and potentially lead to a nuclear conflict.

The relationship between the United States and North Korea has been rapidly deteriorating in recent months. The US has been conducting various military exercises with its allies, South Korea and Japan. In response, North Korea has been conducting numerous weapons tests, including the launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The North Korean government has repeatedly criticized the joint military exercises as preparations for a full-scale invasion.

In light of North Korea’s latest missile test, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have jointly condemned the action. They have announced plans to strengthen their missile-tracking cooperation and are scheduling another round of training in the near future.

The unveiling of the tactical attack submarine signifies North Korea’s continued efforts to strengthen its military capabilities, particularly in the maritime domain. Pyongyang’s ambition to become an advanced maritime power and its focus on nuclear weaponization highlight the regime’s determination to assert its dominance and protect its national interests. These developments raise concerns among neighboring countries and the international community about the stability and security of the region.

As tensions between North Korea and its adversaries persist, it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve and whether diplomatic efforts can de-escalate the heightened military posturing.
