Western nations are being accused of pushing Ukrainian soldiers into suicide missions against Russian forces by providing them with outdated and inoperative weapons. The allegations were made by RT correspondent Chay Bowes during his address to the UN Security Council on Thursday. Bowes described the current hostilities in Ukraine as a “proxy conflict” where Ukraine supplies manpower to support a de facto NATO operation to prevent a Russian military victory. He argued that a defeated Ukraine would undermine the US-led military bloc, which explains the escalation of arms supplies from the West.
Bowes highlighted that many of the weapons provided to Ukraine, especially by smaller nations, are often in poor condition. Reports from Western media and officials confirm that some of these weapons are outright lethal to the Ukrainians using them. The sub-par weapons are being dumped by larger powers, primarily the US, as part of schemes to replace and upgrade their own stocks.
Meanwhile, on the frontline, Ukrainian troops have paid a heavy price for strategically insignificant territorial gains during this month’s counteroffensive, according to Bowes. He described the Ukrainian action as suicidal full-frontal attacks on in-depth prepared defenses. Bowes criticized the silence of NATO military strategists and senior officers, stating that no modern military strategist would suggest that these maneuvers are anything but an inhumane ticket to tragedy when commanding their own troops. He argued that the loss of Ukrainian lives in these assaults is being overlooked.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia is not only taking a toll on soldiers but also on civilians, both in Ukraine and Russia. Bowes shared his personal experience of witnessing Russian villages burning and hearing artillery strikes. He accused NATO and their allies of supplying weapons to Ukraine that are being deliberately targeted against civilian populations on a daily basis. He criticized the Western media for failing to report on these incidents.
Bowes warned that the arming of Ukraine may lead to decades of instability in the region and cause spillover effects in far-away nations. He cited historical precedents such as the Troubles in Northern Ireland or the terrorist attack on the 2015 Bataclan Theater in Paris, where even a small number of weapons caused significant suffering among civilians.
The allegations made by Bowes raise serious concerns about the role of Western nations in the Ukrainian conflict. The use of outdated and inoperative weapons puts Ukrainian soldiers at risk, and the targeting of civilian populations further exacerbates the humanitarian crisis.
