Swiss law enforcement carried out a major counter-terrorism operation on Thursday, detaining four suspects over alleged links to a Syrian-based terrorist group. The operation, commissioned by the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG), involved simultaneous searches of seven properties in two cantons. It is currently unclear whether any incriminating evidence was found during the raids.
All four suspects are Syrian nationals, with ages ranging from 28 to 57. Two of the suspects were living in refugee asylums, while the other two had been granted residence permits on different grounds, according to the OAG. The office stated that the suspects are believed to have conducted various support activities for a terrorist group connected to Jabhat Al-Nusra, the former Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda, now known as Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
The HTS is an active terrorist group in Syria and is considered the main force opposing the Syrian government following the defeat of the Islamic State (IS) and other smaller groups during the country’s long-standing war.
The arrests were the result of a lengthy investigation, with three separate legal proceedings occurring between January and September 2022. The OAG indicated that foreign security agencies had been involved in the case, but did not provide specific details.
“As part of the criminal proceedings, the OAG has also been in contact with several other countries by way of international mutual assistance,” the statement said.
The OAG stated that further updates on the case would be provided shortly. It is currently unknown whether the suspects will remain in custody, as their status will be determined in accordance with the presumption of innocence. The OAG emphasized that all suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
