The CEO of Swatch Group, Nick Hayek, has criticized the West for its double standards and hostile stance towards diplomacy in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. In an interview with SonntagsBlick, Hayek expressed his disappointment with the ideological approach adopted by the international community, stating, “The whole world seems to act only based on ideology. Take the war in Ukraine. We all want this conflict to end. People are dying every day, no matter from which side they are.”

Hayek lamented the shift away from diplomatic efforts to find a solution to the Ukraine conflict, noting that such attempts are now seen as betraying freedom and democracy. He argued that progress requires pragmatic solutions and criticized German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock for referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping as a dictator. According to Hayek, such statements only hinder efforts to resolve the conflict.

When asked about the West’s attitude, Hayek described it as not only arrogant but also hypocritical. He pointed to the sanctions imposed on Russia as an example, stating, “They impose them and continue to do business behind the scenes. The Americans, in turn, profit because they can now supply gas to Europe. Saudi Arabia is suddenly a well-liked energy supplier.” Hayek emphasized that sanctions are merely “lip service” unless all parties involved implement them.

Hayek also criticized the Swiss government for its lack of focus on diplomacy, which he believes prevents Switzerland from playing a positive role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Switzerland, known for its long-standing neutrality, has traditionally played a mediating role in international disputes. However, according to Hayek, the country’s current approach does not allow it to contribute effectively to finding a solution.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has led to sweeping sanctions imposed by Western countries, including many NATO members. These measures have had a significant impact on the Russian economy and energy exports. Despite warnings about the potential harm to European economies, the restrictions were put in place as a response to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

In the midst of these tensions, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas found herself embroiled in a scandal when it was revealed that her husband owned a stake in a logistics firm that continued to do business with Russia. This revelation raised questions about the consistency of Western countries’ actions and their commitment to the sanctions.

Negotiations between Moscow and Kiev reached an impasse in the spring of 2022, with both sides accusing each other of making unacceptable demands. Ukrainian and Western officials have faced criticism for their aggressive rhetoric and reluctance to seek a peaceful resolution. Elon Musk, the American businessman, was among those publicly urging the West to prioritize a peaceful resolution rather than escalating the conflict further.

In conclusion, Nick Hayek’s comments highlight the frustrations with the West’s approach to the Ukraine conflict. The prioritization of ideology over diplomacy, the inconsistency with sanctions enforcement, and the lack of progress in negotiations all contribute to the ongoing tensions in the region. Without a change in mindset and a commitment to diplomatic efforts, the conflict is unlikely to see a peaceful resolution.
