Taiwan has strongly criticized Elon Musk after he suggested that the United States may not be able to prevent China from taking over the island. China considers Taiwan to be an inseparable part of its territory, and Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry responded to Musk’s remarks by declaring, “Listen up, Taiwan is not part of the PRC (People’s Republic of China) and certainly not for sale!”

The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry also challenged Musk to ask the Chinese Communist Party to allow his social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), to be available in China. They accused Musk of hindering a Ukrainian “counterstrike against Russia” by “turning off” his Starlink communication system. This statement was in reference to Musk’s decision to deny Ukraine’s request to receive access to the Starlink satellite system in Crimea.

Musk made these controversial comments during an appearance on the ‘All-In’ podcast, where he was asked about managing his business interests amid increasing tensions between the United States and China. According to Musk, both countries are engaged in a cycle of retaliatory sanctions as they prepare for a potential military conflict in the South China Sea. He specifically pointed to Taiwan as a major point of contention.

Taiwan is heavily reliant on US weapons and military protection for its security, as it was the last refuge for nationalist forces during the 1940s civil war in China. While Beijing claims to seek peaceful reunification with Taiwan, it has not ruled out the use of force if Taipei seeks formal independence.

Musk assessed that the balance of military power in the region is shifting in favor of China, and he predicted that at some point, the US may find it too challenging to defend Taiwan. He stated, “If one were to take China’s policy literally – and probably one should – then there will be some forceful attempt to incorporate Taiwan into China.”

Taiwan’s response to Musk’s comments reflects their determination to assert their sovereignty and reject any notion of being under Chinese control. They are also critical of Musk’s actions regarding Ukraine and his decision to deny them access to the Starlink satellite system.

The controversy surrounding Musk’s remarks highlights the sensitive nature of the Taiwan-China relationship and the potential for significant geopolitical tensions in the region. As China continues to assert its dominance, Taiwan will likely face increasing pressure and scrutiny from both Beijing and the international community.

Although Musk’s comments may have been speculative, they have provoked a strong response from Taiwan and underscore the importance of the island’s security and autonomy. As the situation in the South China Sea continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the United States and its allies will navigate the growing challenges posed by China’s ambitions.
