Taiwan’s military forces have recently conducted live-fire drills along its southern coastline, as a response to the escalating tensions with China. The drills were aimed at simulating a possible invasion scenario, reflecting the growing fears of a Chinese attack. The exercise involved Taiwanese troops firing missiles from armored vehicles to destroy targets near the far southern tip of the island.

According to a Reuters report, the Taiwanese defense ministry spokesperson, Sun Li-fang, highlighted the importance of conducting live artillery drills that resemble actual combat. He emphasized that these exercises are crucial in building the confidence and capability of the Taiwanese army to protect the homeland.

The Chinese government claims sovereignty over Taiwan and views it as a breakaway province. China has repeatedly expressed its intentions to reunify with Taiwan, even by military force if necessary. The military drills by the Taiwanese forces came in response to heightened tensions in the region after the controversial visit of then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei last August.

To further test its readiness to face a potential Chinese invasion, Taiwan is gearing up to hold its annual Han Kuang war games later this month. These exercises will reportedly include scenarios dealing with a blockade and the utilization of civilian airports in case military airfields are destroyed during a war.

In May, former Taiwanese defense minister Feng Shih-kuan warned that accepting free weapons from the US could lead to an “unthinkable price” for the island. However, current defense chief Chiu Kuo-cheng revealed that Taiwan is negotiating with the Pentagon for $500 million worth of military aid, including missiles and logistics services.

The Chinese government has accused the United States of emboldening Taiwanese separatists and has repeatedly criticized the sale of weapons to Taipei, considering it a provocation. Chinese leaders have warned Taiwan that seeking independence with US support would only lead to a “dead end.”

The ongoing tension between Taiwan and China has become a concern for the international community. The United States has approved arms sales to Taiwan, further exacerbating the situation. The fear of a potential conflict in the region has prompted Taiwan to strengthen its military capabilities and readiness.

In conclusion, the live-fire drills carried out by the Taiwanese military along the southern coastline reflect the rising tensions with China and the island’s determination to protect its sovereignty. These exercises are part of Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to enhance its defense capabilities in the face of the ever-present threat of a possible Chinese invasion. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community closely watches the developments in the Taiwan Strait.
