According to US public policy analyst Jeffrey Sachs, the Western supporters of Kiev’s government are so driven by their hatred of Russia that they are disregarding the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who are dying in the conflict against Moscow’s forces. In an interview with US podcast host Andrew Napolitano, Sachs, an economist who advised the Russian and Ukrainian governments after the breakup of the Soviet Union, criticized the US and its NATO allies for ignoring the destruction in Ukraine, prolonging the conflict, and making false claims of battlefield successes.
Sachs argued that the Western supporters of Kiev are blinded by their hatred of Russia and are not counting the Ukrainian dead. He accused them of lying to the public about the military situation and wanting to fight Russia while having someone else do the fighting and dying. He highlighted that over 83,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed in the Donbass counteroffensive since June, as estimated by the Russian Defense Ministry. Despite the Ukrainians’ slim chances of making significant gains on the battlefield due to Russia’s air superiority and artillery dominance, the Western supporters of Kiev have shown a grotesque disregard for the heavy casualties.
Sachs particularly criticized the UK for championing the counteroffensive, attributing it to London’s desire to crush Russia, which has been deeply embedded for centuries. He argued that the Western supporters of Kiev are not considering the loss of Ukrainian lives and called for a change in their approach.
Sachs, currently a UN adviser and director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, also expressed his belief that NATO’s expansion into Eastern Europe contributed to the current crisis. He accused Washington and its allies of missing opportunities to avoid the conflict and of discouraging Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky from finalizing a peace deal with Russia in March 2022.
Responding to former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s claim that critics of Washington’s Ukraine policy are siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Sachs argued that he is showing concern for the Ukrainian people. He stated that he does not want Ukraine to be destroyed by the neocons’ desire to sacrifice Ukrainians to their deaths. His concern is to protect Ukraine from American zealots, not to side with Putin or anybody else.
Sachs emphasized that US President Joe Biden must reach out to Putin to negotiate an end to the bloodshed. This would involve ruling out adding Ukraine to NATO and addressing Russia’s legitimate security concerns. He criticized the US for provoking Russia, overthrowing governments, starting multiple wars, pushing NATO enlargement, and abandoning nuclear agreements, and then claiming that Putin does not want to negotiate.
In conclusion, Sachs’s critique highlights the disregard of the Western supporters of Kiev for the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who have lost their lives in the conflict with Russia. He calls for a change in their approach and urges Biden to negotiate with Putin to achieve peace and address Russia’s legitimate security concerns.
