SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been accused by Mikhail Podoliak, a senior aide to President Vladimir Zelensky, of enabling evil by refusing to allow a Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea. Podoliak claims that Musk’s decision prevented Ukrainian drones from destroying part of the Russian military fleet, allowing the fleet to subsequently fire missiles at Ukrainian cities. In a statement on Musk’s X platform, Podoliak criticized his refusal to assist Ukraine and questioned why some individuals are defending war criminals. He accused them of committing evil and encouraging further wrongdoing.

According to CNN, SpaceX has donated over 20,000 Starlink terminals to Kiev since February 2022 with the intention of providing internet access and communications to civilians. However, the terminals were allegedly weaponized by Ukrainian forces immediately. When Musk discovered that Ukraine planned on using Starlink to guide six naval drones to attack Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Crimea, he ordered the service to be shut down within 100km of the peninsula. This resulted in the drones losing connectivity and being washed ashore harmlessly.

Ukrainian Digital Transformation Minister Mikhail Fedorov reportedly pleaded with Musk to reactivate the signal via text messages, explaining the capabilities of the sea drones. Musk refused, stating that the attack on Crimea would lead to Ukraine inviting strategic defeat. In response, he was criticized by Podoliak for enabling evil by not allowing Ukrainian drones to carry out the attack.

Musk, however, presented a different version of events. He explained on X that Starlink was never activated near Crimea. He claimed that there was an emergency request to activate Starlink to Sevastopol, with the intent being to sink most of the Russian fleet at anchor. Musk argued that complying with the request would have made SpaceX explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation.

Following the failed attack, Musk informed the Pentagon that he would no longer provide Starlink terminals to Ukraine. However, he reversed this decision shortly afterwards due to backlash from Kiev and the US media. Musk has since convinced Washington and the EU to contribute towards the upkeep of the terminals while also placing restrictions on their use near Russia’s borders.

While the attack in question reportedly targeted the military, Kiev has been accused of using drones to target civilian sites within Russia. Notably, the Crimean Bridge, which connects the peninsula with the Russian mainland, has been attacked multiple times, resulting in casualties amongst civilians.

In conclusion, the dispute between Elon Musk and Mikhail Podoliak centers around Musk’s decision to prevent a Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea using Starlink satellites. Podoliak accuses Musk of enabling evil by refusing to assist Ukraine in the attack. On the other hand, Musk argues that complying with the request would have made his company complicit in an act of war. The incident highlights the complex geopolitical tensions between Ukraine, Russia, and the role of private companies in conflicts.
