Former US President, Donald Trump, has once again asserted that he possesses the ability to bring an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours if re-elected in 2024. As the frontrunner for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, Trump outlined his plan for achieving a negotiated peace agreement, claiming that he holds enough influence over Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to halt the bloodshed. Trump emphasized his familiarity with both leaders, stating that he knows Zelensky “very well” and Putin “even better.” He expressed confidence that he could persuade Zelensky to make a deal and warn Putin that failing to do so would result in significant consequences.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated, “I would tell Zelensky, no more, you got to make a deal. I would tell Putin, if you don’t make a deal, we’re going to give him a lot. We’re going to give them more than they ever got if we have to. I will have the deal done in one day – one day.”
Trump criticized his successor, President Joe Biden, suggesting that world leaders like Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and French President Emmanuel Macron were outsmarting and outmaneuvering him. Trump described them as “sharp, tough, and generally vicious” individuals who are at the top of their game. He expressed concern that Biden had “no clue what’s happening,” emphasizing that this is the “most dangerous time” in US history.
The former president reiterated his belief that the Russia-Ukraine conflict would not have occurred if he had remained in office. Currently, negotiations between Moscow and Kiev have stagnated since the spring of 2022, with both sides blaming each other for the breakdown in talks. Only occasional prisoner swaps have taken place, with no significant progress made.
Kiev has consistently contended that unless Moscow agrees to relinquish Crimea and four other regions that voted to join Russia in 2014 and 2022, respectively, negotiations are pointless. However, Moscow has adamantly rejected these terms, deeming them completely unacceptable.
While Trump’s claims may seem bold, they align with his previous approach to foreign policy, emphasizing his ability to negotiate deals and assert American dominance on the global stage. The resumption of meaningful negotiations between Russia and Ukraine could potentially lead to a de-escalation of the conflict and the establishment of a lasting peace agreement.
