Members of the UK Conservative Party have launched a campaign to oust Tobias Ellwood from his position as chair of the Commons Defence Select Committee. He claimed that security had improved, corruption had decreased, and the opium trade had almost disappeared. Labour MP Kevan Jones criticized Ellwood, stating that this was not the first time he had made statements that did not reflect the committee’s position. Jones described Ellwood’s remarks as “beyond the pale.” A parliamentary meeting on Wednesday revealed that four MPs, two from the Conservative Party and two from Labour, supported a no-confidence motion against Ellwood. The 11-member committee is set to vote on Ellwood’s future on September 14, and six votes would be sufficient to remove him from his position.
