The Chinese “spy balloon” that was shot down off the east coast of the US in February did not gather any intelligence, according to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley. In an interview with CBS News, Milley stated that the intelligence community’s assessment is that the balloon did not engage in any intelligence collection.
Since its appearance in the sky over Alaska in January, the balloon had been accused by US officials of being a surveillance craft sent by Beijing to gather intelligence. However, Beijing consistently denied these allegations, maintaining that the balloon was a civilian craft that had been blown off course.
The balloon’s journey took it southward, crossing the US before it was eventually shot down off the coast of South Carolina in early February. Anonymous officials told NBC News in April that the balloon had made multiple passes over US military sites to intercept electronic communications. It then increased its speed in an attempt to exit US airspace as quickly as possible.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the Chinese government for the incident, calling it unacceptable and irresponsible. The US also canceled a planned visit to Beijing in response. However, Milley’s recent comments suggest that the balloon may have indeed been blown off course.
Milley pointed to the strong winds above Hawaii as a possible explanation for the balloon’s route across the US. He stated that the particular motor on the aircraft was unable to counter these winds at its altitude. While Milley acknowledged that the balloon was equipped with sensors and transmitters, he confirmed that it did not collect or transmit any intelligence back to China.
In light of these revelations, it appears that the incident was a result of natural forces rather than a deliberate attempt at espionage.
