US Senator Josh Hawley has expressed his opposition to the US providing additional funds to Ukraine, stating that Kiev has “nothing to show for” the money already received. Speaking to reporters after a closed-door Senate briefing on the situation in Ukraine, Hawley criticized the lack of a clear path to victory and the prospect of endless funding requests. He argued that Germany and other European allies should step up their support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
Hawley’s comments come in response to President Joe Biden’s request for Congress to approve an additional $24 billion in aid to Ukraine. Biden, who recently met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, emphasized the importance of the United States Congress making a wise decision regarding this funding. White House spokesman John Kirby also urged legislators not to block the aid, highlighting the critical nature of the situation in Ukraine.
However, Hawley believes that the US should not provide any more financial assistance to Ukraine and has called for an audit of the funds already sent. He pointed out that the American people have already spent $115 billion on Ukraine with little to show for it. Hawley’s position echoes previous arguments made about US involvement in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, where endless funding has been provided without clear oversight or tangible results.
Meanwhile, on the ground in Ukraine, the much-anticipated counteroffensive launched by Kiev in early June has not yielded significant victories. Ukrainian troops have faced challenges in breaking through fortified Russian positions and navigating dense minefields. These difficulties have prompted NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg to warn that supporters of Ukraine must prepare for a prolonged conflict.
