The United States is reportedly exerting unprecedented influence over Israel’s plans for a ground campaign against Hamas in Gaza due to concerns that a massive attack could escalate the conflict and draw other regional actors into the fray. Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, reported that Israel initially promised coordinated strikes from the air, sea, and land against Hamas. However, the Israeli military later indicated that the ground operation may be different from what was initially expected.

The change in tone from Israel came after a series of high-level visits by US officials, including President Joe Biden himself. According to three unnamed senior Israeli officials, the role and influence of the US in the Israel-Hamas conflict are deeper and more intense than in past conflicts.

While the US wants to see Hamas’ military infrastructure destroyed in Gaza, it also seeks to limit civilian casualties in the densely populated Palestinian enclave. Additionally, US officials are concerned that Israel’s ground campaign could draw Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based Islamist militant group with close ties to Iran, into the conflict. Washington fears that the involvement of Hezbollah could further destabilize the region.

The US’s involvement in influencing Israel’s strategy is motivated by its desire to stabilize the Middle East and promote peace between Israel and Arab countries. An all-out assault on Gaza and the potential opening of a second front in the conflict could derail these efforts and plunge the entire region into turmoil.

President Biden, while condemning the Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians and pledging additional security aid to Israel, has cautioned against being blinded by rage. He emphasized the need for Israel to carefully consider its actions and avoid actions that could worsen the situation.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has met with Israeli service members stationed near Gaza, urging them to prepare for an offensive. He warned that anyone who sees Gaza from afar will soon see it from the inside, indicating a willingness to engage in a ground campaign.

The conflict between Hamas and Israel began on October 7 when Hamas launched a surprise missile and ground attack on Israel. The hostilities have resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries on both sides. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared a state of war and vowed retaliation in response to the attacks.

As of the latest official data, the conflict has claimed the lives of more than 3,800 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis. The ongoing violence has led to widespread destruction and suffering for the people living in Gaza.

In conclusion, the United States is closely involved in shaping Israel’s approach to the conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The US is concerned about the potential for the conflict to escalate and draw in other regional actors. The Biden administration is working to limit civilian casualties and promote stability in the region. However, the situation remains volatile, and the conflict continues to claim lives and cause significant destruction.
